iPhone Released This Morning - Not From Apple
12.18.06 - 09:49am
A phone by any other name is not the same - this time it would seem that a phone with the name is not the same as Linksys
(not Apple), releases the iPhone.
The iPhone is not for downloading music, nor does it have the cool, click wheel, ultra slick design we all expected. Instead is for connecting to your home network and telephone landline, with a very basic look. It allows you to connect to Skype and Yahoo and is Wi-Fi capable. Music, photos, and streaming video are accessed directly from the internet. Real time contact lists let you know if a party is available before you call and one can also search for local business information directly from the phone.
The iPhone name was registered in 1996 by a company called Infogear. Cisco Systems aquired Inforgear in 2000. They then aquired Linksys, a maker of consumer home networking products in 2003.
The iPhone is being released today following announcements of a series of Web-enabled telephone handsets designed to work with Internet calling services - the iPhone series.
Apple and Steve Jobs have not yet commeted on the iPhones release, but unless the name is negotiated with Cisco to be used under them, whatever phone Apple releases will have to start with something other than their famous i.
