With the introduction of the Video iPod and video added to cellular phones and the like their has been a insurgance of new and innovative pods. Pods are described by Current TV as short non-fiction video that tells a story, profiles a character or place, and/or shares and idea. Pods are posted everywhere as podcasts for the iPod, on YouTube, and on Current TV. Pods are being sought after by companies everywhere and Current TV is one of the best places to “get noticed” and “get paid” for your video shorts.
Current TV, which launched in the U.S. August 1st, 2005 allows anyone to upload their video short. Video aired has to pass through Current’s Vanguard Journalism team and pass the code of ethics retaining clean and intelligent video. It is the first network created by, for and with an 18-34 year-old audience with content supplied in part by the audience who watches it.
Current promotes and showcases pods and gives viewers the choice to green light them or not for viewing. It has also created a new wave of viewer-created ads that are being snapped up by companies such as Toyota Corolla, T-mobile and the like. The ads pay up to 50,000 if chosen by sponsors for use beyond Current TV.
Currently a contest is being run in the UK for video shorts, for Current UK. The contest’s three grand prize winners will win lunch with former US vice president Al Gore who is also Current TV’s chairman. Six second prize winners will receive a SonyHD video camera and the first ten submissions will win a video iPod.
President of programming David Neuman commented, “Current is about creating a global dialogue among young adults. This contest is intended to spark that dialogue among young and aspiring filmmakers in the UK, allowing us to capture stories in the voice of our viewers.”
The Current UK contest is only for UK residents. Two contests are currently being run in the U.S. by Flavorpill and Bluelist. Flavorpill wants stories about quality culture and the winners get a shot at getting their story on national TV as well as earning $500 to a $1000 for each pod. Bluelist wants your travel experiences and also pays $500 to a $1000 with national TV recognition.
