“Cruising” Through Art
03.06.07 - 04:20am

Holland America offers nearly 500 cruises to 320 different ports, visiting all seven continents daily. Among the highest rated cruise lines in the world, they also have one of the most notable art collections in the world, valued at tens of millions of dollars. Their exclusive art collection, which previously only affluent cruise travelers were able to view, is now available for all to see as a free download from iTunes.
The tours begin with a welcome message and comments from the President of Holland America and other’s associated with the superb art program. It then dives into the world of art, showcasing the collection through the narration of well-known radio hosts Paul Lasley and Elizabeth Harryman. Interviews, background music and photo images stream onto the iPod screen.
Art, antiques and collectibles are displayed in a 30-40 minute podcast for each of Holland America’s 13 five-star ships. Some of the highlights include a huge Indian silver-overlaid wood palace doorway measuring 7 feet 6 inches by 5 feet 7 inches; two jewel encrusted ostrich eggs; a painting of the Port of Rotterdam (most valuable piece in collection); a collection of 5,000-year-old pre-Columbian carved limestone figures from Ecuador, and a 7-foot Waterford crystal globe that was mouth blown and hand cut.
