iPhones Release In Australia Seems Unlikely Without Upgrades

Currently in Australia only one mobile network exists that uses the Apple iPhone’s 2.5G technology, or the EDGE (a rather outdated technology) and this carrier is Telstra.
Well, as of now, unless the iPhone is updated to 3G technology, it doesn’t look like it will ever become available in Australia as Telstra doesn’t seem very likely to be signing any agreement with Apple.
In fact Telstra operations chief Greg Winn said “There’s an old saying - stick to your knitting - and Apple is not a mobile phone manufacturer, that’s not their knitting.”
He also said, according to the Sydney Morning Herald that although the iPhone had a touch screen, he did not believe that made the device revolutionary, just simply the next step in the cellphone evolution.
Winn also said they made a number of oversights, including the name (already belonging to Cisco).
“They did an exclusive with Cingular and they talked about a global rollout - well, Cingular is not a global company,” he said.
It is supposed to be available to Australians next year - but without 3G the question is if not Telstra than who will be the carrier for the iPhone.
