iPod’s Are Helping Students With Reading Disabilities

In Des Moines, Iowa, iPods are being used, not to listen to music but rather to help teach.
Sandi Rankin, computer teacher at Northview Middle School, devised a way to use the iPod after attending a podcasting conference.
She uses it to help students with reading disabilities by recording her tests and downloading them onto the iPod. This way students like ninth grader Bill Taylor, who is behind on his reading but working on it, can take a test in the classroom with fellow students, rather than having to leave the room and have another teacher read him the test. Now he can simply put on the white ear buds and take the test at his own pace.
Taylor said, “It’s one of the best things they’ve ever had.â€
The shool has purchased four iPods and is using them in computer and French courses.
