Thanko has solved both problems with their Vonia Sports Headband BCT - a fully integrated system for almost any MP3 player that makes the headphones utterly unnecessary.
The headwrap uses BCT (bone conduction technology). BTC conveys the vibration of the sound through your skull directly to your audiotry nerve, bypassing the tympanic membrane. Basically you can hear the music without your ears! 
This leaves your ears free to hear all the other noises, such as the car coming at you. You could even still hear your boss at work although he might wonder at your choice of fashion accessories.
