Apple Red or Green?

Apple is going greener and while Greenpeace is still not satisfied, Jobs in an open letter posted on the Apple website did well to justify where Apple currently is and where it is going.

Apple has taken much grief over the past year from Greenpeace and environmentalists, mainly because they have refused to acknowledge what it is they are doing to go greener but as stated in the letter Jobs wrote, “today we’re changing our policy.”

Apple states that it is taking steps to eliminate toxic chemicals in its computers by going to LED backlit display, as well as no longer using flame-retardant chemicals and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in any products. Apple is also working to get rid of mercury in its monitor backlighting as soon as it becomes “technically and economically feasible”.

Apple has also said that it will recycle all the environmental waste it collects in North America in North America. This will be done instead of shipping the old computers and iPods to India and China were they sit in landfills and leak out the harmful substances, exposing them to children.

While this current commitment is a beginning, Greenpeace is asking for the commitment to be extended to other countries saying, “While customers in the US will be able to return their Apple products for recycling, knowing that their gear won’t end up in the e-waste mountains of Asia and India, Apple isn’t making that promise to anyone but customers in the USA. Elsewhere in the world, an Apple product today can still be tomorrow’s e-waste. Other manufacturers offer worldwide takeback and recycling. Apple should too!”
