nuTsie hopes To Capitalize On iPhone Hype

The iPhone is bringing a lot of press to anything and everything that resembles it, works with it, or is part of its competition and that is exactly what nuTsie is hoping for.

Nutsie (an iTunes anagram) was launched yesterday by Melodeo and is a service that is set to play your iTunes library by streaming the music to your phone. This means that your phone will not actually download the music, but you will have access to all of your iTunes library. Melodeo is hoping to capitalize on all the people who don’t want to invest in the high priced iPhone, but want to have access to their iTunes music on their phone.

Dave Dederer, Melodeo Vice President of Media Content said,  “People have invested time and energy into their libraries, and we’re trying to embrace and extend that universe,” he said. “It’s an extension of the value you’re already getting out of the iTunes universe.”

The service uses “radio rules” to do this, meaning that just like radio it pays a royalty for every song it streams. It also has to follow radio rules, which means that when you play your iTunes music on your phone it will be shuffled randomly.

Melodeo is hoping that with the iPhones immense hype, nuTsie will get a lot of side press, as well as a lot of interest from other phone makers who are looking for innovative ways to compete with the Apple iPhone.

“The timing of our launch is not coincidental,” said Dederer.

Melodeo has not yet decided on how they will make money off of the service, which is being offered for free for a limited time. They may end up offering a subscription service, a one time start-up fee or perhaps advertising with ads played in between songs like the radio does. Personally I hope they go with one of the first two as you don’t have an iTunes library set-up to listen to commercials.
