“No ‘iPop’ For Orbitcom,” Says Apple
06.25.07 - 01:51pm
Apple is saying no to the name Orbitcoms iPop. A name that Orbitcom wants to have for their new software . This is the second time Apple has said no to the company. The first time they solely wanted to use the name iPop without having the added Orbitcoms.
The software allows users to combine their CRM system with their telephone system. The system will pop up relevant information when a customer phones in and create a phone call record.
Tony Shi, Orbicoms CEO said, “The name ‘iPop’ comes from the screen ‘pop’ and the ‘i’ refers to information, intelligence and integration.”
Shi said he was quite surprised when Apple rejected the name saying iPop was too close to iPod.
Apple threatened legal action with the first name iPop and has threatened new action with the name change Orbitcoms iPop.
Shi said they added the Orbitcom hoping Apple would approve cause they can’t afford to take Apple head on in court due to financial reasons stating that the court costs would be too high for them.
“An initial cost estimation? I’ve been advised it’s in the range of NZ$40,000-$50,000 (£15,500 - £19,500). This is not viable for the product we’re trying to promote. So, we are at the stage of evaluating our options, while other processes are taking their course,†Shi said.
He also lamented about how difficult it is for a “small company small company like us to defend our position, with our limited, almost non-existent, legal budget compared with Apple’s.”
“Apple suggested that they would not object to ‘Orbitcoms Pop’ - very kind of them,†said Shi.
