Initial iPhone Reviews - The Good and The Bad

There has been some journalists who were lucky enough to get the hands on the golden item of the year - the iPhone. Their reviews however have been mixed as to just how great it is.

The most loved aspect is the touch-screen interface. USA Today’s Edward Baig said, “I expected to miss the tactile feel that a physical keyboard provides. I didn’t.” The Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg and Katherine Boehret said, “”In general, we found this interface … to be effective, practical and fun.”

Some of the complaints rest around AT&T’s service (something people wondered about), with New York Times’ David Pogue saying that AT&T’s Edge network is sloooow and the service is unreliable. He said “”If Verizon’s slogan is, “Can you hear me now?” AT&T’s should be, “I’m losing you.”

While Baig loved the touch screen he also had some trouble with the phone. He was live on CNBC attempting to demonstrate the iPhone and couldn’t get the phone to connect to the internet - (ouch, that’s gotta hurt).

The other complaints revolve around the iPhone itself. There are some features (small ones) missing - (those ones you don’t realize you miss until they aren’t there). Those are the lack of voice dialing and voice recognition, and the fact that you can’t send pictures to other cell phones unless using e-mail and then the other phone must also have e-mail access and photo attachment. Also there is no way to copy or paste text

In spite of the problems Baig did in the end say, “Apple has delivered a prodigy — a slender fashion phone, a slick iPod and an Internet experience unlike any before it on a mobile handset.”

Pogue also liked the iPhone overall, even with the service problems, he said, “Even in version 1.0, the iPhone is still the most sophisticated, outlook-changing piece of electronics to come along in years. It does so many things so well, and so pleasurably, that you tend to forgive its foibles.”
