iPod Thieves Caught In The Act By Dateline

Dateline NCB has done exposes covering all sorts of illicit acts and now they are catching iPod thieves in the act.
Dateline uncovered with some brilliance that if you leave your iPod unattended it will get stolen (as if you didn’t already know that!)
But more important they caught the thieves in the act, which may at least cause a thief to think twice for a moment anyway before grabbing the next iPod laying on the park bench! (Too bad they couldn’t get the guys on tape who hold the gun to peoples head to get their iPod)
One place Dateline left the iPod was on the dashboard of a convertible vehicle. It took mere seconds for that one to disappear as a group of students walked by.
They also get to ambush the iPod thieves with interviews about their recently committed crime. Always fun to watch the criminals trying to flub a good lie after being caught.
Although not unearthing anything new in the fact that we all know that iPod theft is out of control, what Dateline did do was show that it was simple and easy to add tracking software to the iPod so when the new user hooked up the stolen iPod they had to re-register it effectively telling Dateline who and where they were.
Dateline was then able to go to the stealer’s houses, pretend they had won something for having the iPod and ask them about where they got it. Then they would pounce with the video showing where they had stolen it from. (fun!)
Dateline did the expose in order to show how simple adding this software would be and if the software was added it would most likely be a huge deterrent in the number of iPod thefts happening today and perhaps less people would end up dead over a $300 piece of equipment.
