iTunes is getting competition from all angles and with the launch of Wal-Marts DRM free tunes and also with the collaboration of MTV, RealNetworks and Verizon wireless both set to bring iTunes new competition.
In a statement made Wednesday Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music & Logo group said, “Today, we’re really excited to announce that MTV Networks, RealNetworks, and Verizon Wireless are getting together to announce a new, integrated digital music experience that consumers can access through their PCs, portable music devices, and mobile phones. The new service combines the musical curating and programming of MTV Networks’ critically-acclaimed Urge service with the best of Real’s market-leading Rhapsody service.”
There is no word yet on when the launch of the new service will take place but the collaboration between MTV and RealNetworks will be called Rhapsody America, a new company formed to oversee the service. For now until Urge shuts down entirely there will be MTV content on Rhapsody which Urge users will have full access to. “We’ve launched some Urge-specific, sort-of-MTV-Network-brand-specific content for Rhapsody subscribers,” said Real spokeswoman Rhonda Scott. “Today, we launched some content related to the upcoming Video Music Awards, and that’s just the start of it.”
American Rhapsody will then be entering a joint partnership with Verizon. They will use Verizon’s V Cast Music exclusively to deliver music to mobile phones. V Cast Music will then be able to tap into Rhapsody’s music catalog.
“If you think about the assets, the services, that each of these companies bring to the table, what we’re looking to do is very smoothly integrate those services, so as to enable you to have access to your music from any point - desktop or mobile device - instantly and intuitively,” said John Stratton chief marketing officer of Verizon.
Again like Wal-Mart American Rhapsody will have access to Universals music test of DRM free songs, a test iTunes was left out of. They will also sell EMI’s catolog DRM free.
