AT&T Stops Killing Trees/Summarizes iPhone Bill
08.23.07 - 12:41pm
AT&T has decided to reign in on their obsessively detailed iPhone bills after the world mocked the company over bills that were pages and pages and pages and more pages long. So much so that they were mailed like a package, some totaling over 300 pages, as was the case with Justine Ezarik, who placed a YouTube video showcasing the bill.
The reason the bills were so long is that they detailed every time a person went on the web, every time they sent a text, every time they sent a picture regardless of whether they had unlimited minutes or unlimited texting.
After the resounding flack about the numerous trees being cut down just to cover people’s iPhone bills AT&T has wisely decided to begin just sending a summary of the bills which will typically average about three pages, small enough to be sent in a standard envelope.
Wednesday iPhone users should have received this text message saying,”We are simplifying your paper bill, removing itemized detail. To view all detail go to att.com/mywireless. Still need full paper bill? Call 611.”
AT&T was upset enough over the flack that they will now be charging if someone wants to receive an itemized bill in the mail, at a cost of a $1.99 for the bill per phone line.
“From now on iPhone customers will get the summary bill, which has very little detail,” confirmed AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel today.
AT&T users can get the full itemized bill online, however if they wish for free, and can switch over to online completely, getting rid of their paper bills entirely if they wish.
AT&T will also be switching all their other phone bills to summary form as well starting Sept. 28th unless one already receives the itemized bill. If they do receive the itemized bill and still wish to receive it they can for free until they make a change to their service plan. Then they will be charged for the itemized bill.
“We don’t want people to be overburdened with voluminous bills,” said Siegel.
