“Third Screen” Can Launch Career

The “third screen” is what? While news has been that less than 3% of iPod Video owners use the video feature on the iPod the “third screen” is growing and more and more media is attempting to use it. Raincoast Books and partner Pocket Cine Inc. are not only attempting to use it, but also improve it by creating contests such as “Worst Case Scenario”.
In addition to the contest, Pocket Cine is searching for talented Canadian animators interested in creating video for the mobile market. Philip Shaddock, President of Pocket Cine, says: “This is a new form of social media that is challenging and exciting, requiring fresh talent with fresh perspective on designing for ‘pocket cinema.’ If we spot contest entrants who we think are doing something really interesting, we’ll offer them a contract to create something new and original for cellphone video.”
The “Worst Case Scenario” contest is for professional or amateur artists to try their skills using the “third screen”. They create a one minute video that uses “the worst case scenario” books as inspiration. The popular books go over worst case scenarios tips from weddings to college and just about everything else one can think of.
The artist who creates the best video will win a $500 shopping spree in 1 of 90 participating bookstores across Canada and perhaps a lot more. Newel Anderson who created a 1-minute promotional video for the worst-case scenario contest was then contracted by PocketCine to create an experimental music video. Anderson has since been signed by MTV to do a rap video.
A video gallery will showcase the entries, allowing fans to vote for their favorite submissions, share the links with friends, and download the videos to video-capable mobile devices, such as cellphones and iPods.
