Serenata - Phone W/ Built-In Speakers

Samsung is launching their first competition to the iPhone with the Serenata.

The Serenata doesn’t look like the iPhone or any other phone we’ve ever seen, rather it more resembles on first glance an itty bitty juke box. Created by designer David Lewis the organic rounded shape of the Seranata was made to resemble pebbles shaped by ocean waves. (That is what it says on the website) Either way it is an utterly unique phone design.

Like the iPhone the Seranata does have a touch screen, although on the Seranata this feature is secondary. The primary functions of the Serenata are made through the navigation wheel, which is located above the top screen and dominates the phone. The navigation wheel controls searching menus, dialing, writing, accessing music lists, and almost all the functions of the phone.

The LCD 2.26 inch touch screen located below the navigation wheel is more for viewing song lists, phone lists, e-mail and text messages.

Where the Serenata goes off totally on its own is in the design. The phone is basically two speakers with a built in bass system. It can play amplified music for up to five hours through the speakers and about 13 hours through a headset. It also has a built in panel that folds out and creates a stand for the phone to sit in while it belts out music.

“Serenata is another example of new ways to think of the mobile phone. I’m proud to say that our customers can see a true innovation of music player and mobile phone as we have opened a new era of mobile phones with Serene two years ago,” Geesung Choi, president of the Telecommunications Network Business in Samsung Electronics, said.

Other cool features of the phone include PureMusic mode that allows you to listen to music uninterrupted from calls and interesting ringtones such as bamboo. The phone also has a blue light when it is in phone mode and a red light when it is in music mode.

As far as what the phone lacks, storage is one of them. The phone holds 4GB of storage, quite a bit less than the iPhone’s 8GB. The phone also lacks the iPhones built in Safari web browser but does have SMS, MMS, e-mail, fast data transfer, video streaming and podcasts. It also lets you synchronize your contacts, calender entries and “to do” list from your computer by installing the Samsung PC Studio software it comes with.

No word yet on pricing. The phone is set to be released in Europe at the end of October, just before the launch of the iPhone there on Nov. 9th.
