iPod Nano’s On Fire!

Lithium-ion batteries have been recalled in the past, when they were found to be the cause of laptop computers as well as cell phones overheating and catching fire. Now, the batteries are under fire again, this time as a possible cause of an iPod nano overheating and emitting sparks as it was being recharged by a Tokyo owner.
Japan has announced an immediate investigation into the iPod nano’s batteries to be done by Japanese officials.
The iPod nano has been blamed previously for emitting sparks particularly when it caught fire to a man’s pants while in his pocket last year. Owner Danny Williams of Atlanta was not seriously hurt and the iPod nano was sent back to Apple so they could examine it.
Apple MacBook users have complained in several online forums of seeing sparks coming from their laptops. Apple has knowledge of these instances but has refrained from making comments on the nano or the laptops at the moment.
Lithium-ion powered electrical devices have seen many recalls in the past. Nokia recalled 46 million batteries made for Nokia phones last August. Sony also recalled 10 million used in their computers in 2006.
Lithium-ion batteries are popular since they deliver lots of power while retaining a small size however some companies, such as Toyota have refused to use the batteries as they see too much risk in them catching fire.
You can reduce chances of your iPod nano overheating by taking it out of its case when charging. Other than that just check it periodically to make sure it is not getting hot.
