Mobilcast has just announced the joint venture of Nissan and the new iPod 1 Bluetooth 2 Transmitter for cars, which will work with the Nissan’s CARWINGS HDD navigation system.
The system will allow you to listen to your iPod wirelessly, tucked in a bag or laying on your seat. The iPod Bluetooth Transmitter can be used as a remote control with a Page function for improved connectivity with car navigation.
Seamless switching with Bluetooth hands-free (HF) communication and Bluetooth data communications (DUN) for telematics has been realized. Also success was was achieved in changing the music transmission packet value to improve jumping.
There was one clarification on the press release that was a little sketchy though, it said that the “device may not operate when used in combination with products of other companies.” Hopefully all you’ll need when driving your Nissan is your BlueTooth and your iPod.

We Americans spend over 500 million hours per week in our cars - while making 70% of our phone calls.
The California Highway Patrol, conducted a study and found that making and receiving these calls via hand-held cell phones, were the leading cause of accidents generated by distracted drivers.
Now we have chosen to add to the distraction, by not only reaching for our cell phone, but also by rolling the click wheel on our iPod, switching stations on our satellite radio or trying to work our satellite navigation system - all on separate systems, placed in separate areas. This can then cause random scrambling as our cell phone rings - still in our purse, or reaching for the iPod after it is dropped while attempting to change songs. These two or three seconds of looking down is often all it takes for the wheel to turn, or for something to happen in front of you seen too late when your eyes return to the road.

Bluetooth is finding itself in hot water as legal action from the Washington Research Foundation is set in motion. The Foundation has filed a lawsuit seeking damages with an injunction to stop Samsung, Nokia and Matsushia (Panasonic) from
selling gadgets in the U.S. that use Bluetooth technology.
The Washington Research Foundation claim is that it owns a patent on the Bluetooth technology used in the devices sold by the three companies. The lawsuit only covers devices sold or used in the U.S., therefore Cambridge Silicon Radio, a British firm that makes the Bluetooth chips was not named in the lawsuit.
The Washinton Research Foundation defends the “fruits of research” carried out at institutions in Washington State and claims it resorted to legal action only after attempts to reach a negotiated settlement with the three companies was thwarted.

Kleer announced today the first ever reference design for small form factor wireless earphones. These earphones would not only play for 10 hours, but are untethered without any wires connecting the right and left ear, or to the player. They would also have an iPod adaptor and would allow more than one listener to listen to the player at a time.
Kleer will be exhibiting the design at CES 2007. The design is based on the company’s KLR3012 RF audio module. The design will provide manufactures with the baseline set of technical information needed to bring these wireless headphones to market.
“We’re hearing from consumer electronics manufacturers that wireless earphones is the most requested feature in the portable audio market today,” said Ron Glibbery, VP of Marketing for Kleer. “Due to the high power consumption of existing wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, cumbersome over-the-ear style headphones are required to accommodate a large battery. Kleer’s wireless earphone design uses only one-tenth of the power of a comparable Bluetooth design, so our battery size requirements are much smaller.

When iPods first came out all sorts of ipod accessories were born with everything from ipod cases to clothing with iPod integration. Companies are now taking that integration to a whole new level.
“Smart Clothing” as it is being called does more than just have a great pocket to store your iPod in and a way to hide the wires. “Smart clothing” will actually allow you to control your iPod by touching your shirt and these smart textiles are being created to do a lot more than just shuffle for your favorite song. They are also being created to save lives and are expanding the field of clothing into a whole new dimension.
The “smart” textiles are made with fabrics conductive to electricty, or that have plastic optical fibers and other specialty fibers woven into the fabric. These optical and electrical conductive fibers will allow the shirt to wirelessly communicate with other devices, transferring data from the sensors embedded in the shirt. They can respond to touch, measure vital signs and then carry electronic signals to a user or interface.

The first Bluetooth-based in-ear wireless earphones were introduced Tuesday by Etymotic Research. The earphones each weigh less than one half an ounce, with the battery in one and a circuit antenna and controls in the other. Audio is played back at 44.1 Kbits per second, according to the company. Since they’re in-ear earphones, the Ety 8’s provide external noise exclusion functionality; Etymotic rates the reduction at 35 to 40 decibels (dB).
The earphones use a new low-power chipset manufactured by Broadcom which minimizes size and reduces power consumption, according to Etymotic. The battery lasts 7 to 10 hours per charge.
The 8Mate iPod adaptor that Etymotic sells along with the Ety 8 earphones enables you control sound volume, track selection, play/pause and previous/next track functions from both the earphone and the iPod.
The earphones are expected to be available at retailers beginning in early December for US$299 bundled with an iPod adaptor, or $199 for the earphones alone. They come in a variety of eartips providing snug custom fit for any ear.
