Kleer Announces Truly Wireless Headphone Design

Kleer announced today the first ever reference design for small form factor wireless earphones. These earphones would not only play for 10 hours, but are untethered without any wires connecting the right and left ear, or to the player. They would also have an iPod adaptor and would allow more than one listener to listen to the player at a time.

Kleer will be exhibiting the design at CES 2007. The design is based on the company’s KLR3012 RF audio module. The design will provide manufactures with the baseline set of technical information needed to bring these wireless headphones to market.

“We’re hearing from consumer electronics manufacturers that wireless earphones is the most requested feature in the portable audio market today,” said Ron Glibbery, VP of Marketing for Kleer. “Due to the high power consumption of existing wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, cumbersome over-the-ear style headphones are required to accommodate a large battery. Kleer’s wireless earphone design uses only one-tenth of the power of a comparable Bluetooth design, so our battery size requirements are much smaller.

Hearing Loss From iPods

One doesn’t often think about the ramifications of listening to our favorite music at a loud volume, but the effects can be permanent. ” Hearing loss is achieved when listeners turn up the volume to higher than 85 decibels. IPods and portable players, on average can reach about 105 to 110 decibles at full volume. Researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Children’s Hospital in Boston said last month that listening to music with earbuds or headphones, at full volume, for more than five minutes a day can increase the risk of hearing loss. They said users can safely listen to a portable music device for up to 4.6 hours a day if they stay at or below 70 percent peak volume.

People can lose half of their hearing range before they notice it,” said Webster, a retired Hollins University psychology professor. Of the 33 million American adults with some degree of hearing loss, about 22 million suffered permanent damage from loud noise, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. That number is expected to go up to 78 million by 2030.

Are we tuning out, rather than tuning in?

When the Redwire DLX ipod compatible jeans were launched in Bangalore, India yesterday for the first time the director said that the jeans signal a new step in the integration of technology into ones lives as consumers today live through their gadgets, gizmos and technology.

“Live through” our gadgets?, gizmos?, and technology?, – is that what we do. The answer is pretty much yes. Think of how often you drown yourself in a cell phone conversation or turn your iPod volume up while walking in order to tune out the world around you. (It’s the “please don’t talk to me mode”) Now we even have products such as the Ear 3 that flash red when the volume is too loud, so we know when we’ve turned our headphones up to much! It would seem we are not only tuning out the world, but making darn sure we do a good job of it by tuning it out LOUDLY. We are also paying for it according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. About 22 million adults suffer permanent damage from loud noise.

Bluetooth Wireless Headphones for iPod

The first Bluetooth-based in-ear wireless earphones were introduced Tuesday by Etymotic Research. The earphones each weigh less than one half an ounce, with the battery in one and a circuit antenna and controls in the other. Audio is played back at 44.1 Kbits per second, according to the company. Since they’re in-ear earphones, the Ety 8’s provide external noise exclusion functionality; Etymotic rates the reduction at 35 to 40 decibels (dB).

The earphones use a new low-power chipset manufactured by Broadcom which minimizes size and reduces power consumption, according to Etymotic. The battery lasts 7 to 10 hours per charge.

The 8Mate iPod adaptor that Etymotic sells along with the Ety 8 earphones enables you control sound volume, track selection, play/pause and previous/next track functions from both the earphone and the iPod.

The earphones are expected to be available at retailers beginning in early December for US$299 bundled with an iPod adaptor, or $199 for the earphones alone. They come in a variety of eartips providing snug custom fit for any ear.
