Want to control your TiVo from your office?

Now you can, from your iPhone or iPod Touch thanks to the new application called TiVoRemote.  A user named Duckfin has compiled a program that gives the iPod touch and iPhone  a TiVo Remote.  The TiVoRemote, makes a practical use of TiVo’s Telnet control feature.  With most other apps, it does require a jail broken iPhone or iPod.

Installation is quite simple and will allow for TiVoRemote to be installed, once a new source has been added. When you launch this program and enter the settings menu, the next requirement is the TiVo’s IP address.  Your iPod or iPhone is now ready to control your Series 3 or HD TiVo.  Hit the TiVoRemote link in order to complete the instructions.

For installation, you can simply add http://tivoremote.googlecode.com/svn/www/repo.xml to your installer app sources and click on the TiVoRemote in the “toys” category. Now you’re ready to finish that project at work while your TiVoRemote does the work for your TiVo at home.

3G iPhone On The Way???…

3g.jpgEveryone knows the 3G iPhone is coming, the question is how soon? The answer may be sooner than we think.

According to the Huffington Post Apple has yet to restock their stores in New York City with the current 2G iPhone. All three NYC Apple stores are now “out of stock.”

There has been some speculation that the new 3G will be coming in June, yet it is only March and with three more months till June is it possible we may be seeing the 3G iPhone a little sooner?

Guess we’ll have to check back on NYC to see if it is just an error that they are “sold out” of the old ones. Otherwise hold on to your horses folks the rumor of the new 3G iPhone may just become factual sooner than later.

iPhone Becomes Business Savvy

email_1.jpgThe iPhone is getting better and better. Not only has Gartner, a world’s leading information technology research and advisory company labeled it ready for business use, along the same lines as the Blackberry, Windows mobile and Symbian Series 60 devices with the upcoming firmware 2.0 release, but soon you will also be able to conduct 2-way video conferencing.

Gartner had previously deemed the iPhone unfit for business use but points out three features in the 2.0 that will bring it up to business speed. First is the access to corporate Microsoft Exchange email servers, second is the secure Virtual Private Network links for the office and third is that users can connect to secure corporate wireless networks in the office.

This will allow “enterprises to develop local code and create applications that do not depend on network capabilities,” says Gartner’s Ken Dulaney. “Expansion of the iPhone into the enterprise could mean that Apple will become a mainstream supplier of client platform development tools. This could mean that other Apple products begin to appeal to end users.

Apple Says It WILL Hit 10 Million!

Apple has come back against analysts who have said that Apple most likely won’t meet their goal of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008, with COO Tim Cook saying in a talk last night that Apple would do anything to reach that goal including dumping their revenue sharing model if they must. “We’re not married to any business model. What we’re married to is shipping the best phones in the world,” Cook said.

10_million.jpgCook said that all the unlocked iPhones in places like China were not a bad sign but rather a sign of continuing iPhone demand. Apple is also planning to set up pre-paid iPhone plans as some regions of the world don’t have post-paid plans. Visual voice mail and some other key features may also have to be dropped in some regions.

As far as the Touch cannibalizing iPhone sales Cook was clear saying, “I’d rather Apple cannibalize Apple than somebody else cannibalize Apple. It was very key for the iPod line to go in this direction.”

Free iPhone w/ Education

freeiphone1.jpgOne way to get students to choose your University over others - give ‘em free stuff. Not just any stuff, but cool stuff and stuff that has high technology advantages for the students. What would that be? Why an iPhone or iPod Touch of course.

This year anyone going to the Abilene Christian University (ACU) in Texas for their first year will receive a free iPhone or iPod Touch at the start of their fall semester.

“We are not merely providing cutting-edge technology tools to our incoming students,” said Kevin Roberts, ACU’s Chief Information Officer. “We are also providing the web applications that ensure these tools will become critical to the students’ learning experience.

The devices will be used for homework alerts, directions to professors’ offices, meal and account balances, in-class surveys and even quizzes. Along with that they will be used to experiment new web applications. Already the ACU IT department has developed 15 web applications for the devices.

iPlayer + iPhone + TV = Cool

bbc.jpgThe BBC iPlayer has been used to watch over 17 million programs, no small feat as it was launched less than two months ago on Christmas Day, 2007. The BBC iPlayer is a broadband TV service. The only other broadband TV services that are offered are for Mac and PC computers. The iPlayer is the first mobile TV service.

The much lauded player will soon be available for the iPhone and the Touch. The BBC will begin transcoding their shows into MPED-4-based H.264. They also have Adobe’s Flash system but are considering dropping it altogether for the higher compressed, higher quality streams of the H.264.

“We have seen good and consistent growth in the daily consumption of programming and it doesn’t look to be in any way plateauing,” said Ashley Highfield, the director of future media and technology at the BBC. Last week the number of shows watched reached over 500,000 in one day.

China Has Plenty Of iPhones Without Apple.

chinaiphone_3.jpgApple and China Mobile may not have agreed on a collaboration for the iPhone, but that hasn’t stopped Chinese consumers from purchasing the phone and running it on the China Mobile network. As of the end of 2007 China Mobile said they had over 400,000 iPhones active on it’s network. Amounting to more than has been activated in all of Europe.

“The main reasons that Chinese mobile users purchase smartphones include entertainment (such as music players, cameras and video) and to access mobile Internet applications (such as IM, e-book, and games). We believe the iPhone will be favored by these consumers as it can better meet such demand”, Anty Zheng, Content Manager In-Stat China, explained in a February report.

iPhone Users Suffer AT&T Data Blackout Error

blackout.jpgAT&T has been the scapegoat for much of the iPhone problems since the network first acquired the device. Yesterday’s data access failure due to GGSN feed problems won’t help any.

The Southeast and Midwest were the effected regions of the “blackouts” The company said calling and voice mail were still working, just no data was accessible.

The problem had to do with the Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) which acts as a gateway between a GPRS wireless data network and other networks such as the internet. The problems began around 6:30 a.m. EST and were fixed around 4:00.

The company says they still don’t know what caused the problem and apologized for any inconvenience to customers. “Our first priority was to get the service running again,” said Meghan Roskopf, an AT&T spokeswomen. “We are now looking for causes.”

The Blackberry was also one of the phones that was affected along with other smart phones running on the network.
