iPod Nano’s On Fire!

sparks.jpgLithium-ion batteries have been recalled in the past, when they were found to be the cause of laptop computers as well as cell phones overheating and catching fire. Now, the batteries are under fire again, this time as a possible cause of an iPod nano overheating and emitting sparks as it was being recharged by a Tokyo owner.

Japan has announced an immediate investigation into the iPod nano’s batteries to be done by Japanese officials.

The iPod nano has been blamed previously for emitting sparks particularly when it caught fire to a man’s pants while in his pocket last year. Owner Danny Williams of Atlanta was not seriously hurt and the iPod nano was sent back to Apple so they could examine it.

Apple MacBook users have complained in several online forums of seeing sparks coming from their laptops. Apple has knowledge of these instances but has refrained from making comments on the nano or the laptops at the moment.

Spontaneously Combusting iPod

Many people expect their beloved Nano’s to die sometime around the two-year mark, they however expect them to die a slow long death, not spontaneously combust as an Atlanta man’s Nano did.

Danny Williams, who works at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was on duty when his suddenly his iPod burst into flames while still in his pants pocket.

The fire raged for about 15 seconds before going out. Williams was a little distraught but escaped with only mild burns due to the glossy paper he also had in his pocket.

ā€œI’m still kind of freaked out that only after a year and a half my iPod caught fire in my pocket. If TSA had come by and seen me smoking, they could have honestly thought I was a terrorist,ā€ said Danny Williams.

Apple has promised to replace the Nano and has asked for the burned out iPod so they can conduct an investigation into the matter.
