One way to get students to choose your University over others - give ‘em free stuff. Not just any stuff, but cool stuff and stuff that has high technology advantages for the students. What would that be? Why an iPhone or iPod Touch of course.
This year anyone going to the Abilene Christian University (ACU) in Texas for their first year will receive a free iPhone or iPod Touch at the start of their fall semester.
“We are not merely providing cutting-edge technology tools to our incoming students,” said Kevin Roberts, ACU’s Chief Information Officer. “We are also providing the web applications that ensure these tools will become critical to the students’ learning experience.
The devices will be used for homework alerts, directions to professors’ offices, meal and account balances, in-class surveys and even quizzes. Along with that they will be used to experiment new web applications. Already the ACU IT department has developed 15 web applications for the devices.
So, since the inception of the iPhone, the only thing to come close to competing with it is the iPod Touch.
Which is better? Well the iPhone of course! Always has web connectivity and you can make your calls etc, etc., but the iPhone also has that ongoing bill every month (Uck!). With the Touch it’s a one time paid deal and your done. (Yeah!) Free to roam the web when you can connect via Wi-Fi with most of the same options as the iPhone. Still the iPhone has it all, the Touch you can be stuck in Timbuktu land and no web access even with EDGE access - but again the bill! (Ugh!)
Here at iFrogz the debate raged on and on thus finally ending in an epiphany moment. We’ll let you decide which is better, and we’ll let you decide which one you want for free. So there it is, it’s your choice, all you have to do is enter.
The long awaited (well, long in two months is forever dudes long) iphone hack to free the iPhone from AT&T’s slow and sometimes just plain lousy service has been done. By who? - well a 17 year-old kid named George Holtz who actioned off one of the iPhones on e-bay for a new Nissan 350z. His e-bay auction did get shut down by pranksters offering millions for the iPhone but Holtz still made out pretty well.
Not many could probably do what he has done however as the tools he used involved; an iPhone, a trusty case opener, a soldering iron, fine pitch wire, an unlock switch and a Red Bull energy drink. Basically you must solder new connections into the microcircuitry - another basically - if you really want it done hire Holtz to do it for you, unless you’re really good at soldering or unless you don’t mind a $600 paperweight.
