iPhone Takes The iPod’s Top Web Search Crown

The iPod has ruled the internet in searches for most of the last three years and it has been thrown off by none other than its close sibling - the iPhone.

Searches of the iPhone tell what people are most interested in with the top 5 iPhone searches relating to, of course, price.

“Problems with my iPhone” landed in at number 6 probably for those who couldn’t figure it out or those who just got plain mad at not being able to figure it out leading to the 20th most searched term “smashing my iPhone” - Just in case you don’t want to throw your $600 against the wall but can’t get it to work right and feel the need to see someone else do it there is no shortage of YouTube videos showing thousands of dollars being smashed away.

For those who know the price yet go for a different way to obtain it - contests and giveaways - put “free iphone” in the 8th most searched spot.

How Many iPhones Are Left?

The iPhone has launched and shouts of “I got it!” heard in the street began the evening of June 29th, a day destined to go down in history as iDay.

The launch of iDay had over 200,000 units going out the door. Over half the stores sold out in the first 24 hours and total over the weekend saw between 500,000 to 600,000 iPhones sold.

Harry E. Blount of Lehman brothers wrote, “There are 1,800 AT&T stores around the nation and we estimate that they each received 60-70 iPhones for the launch for a total of 108,000-126,000 phones in the U.S… We estimate that at least 154,000 were shipped in time for the launch to Apple stores in aggregate (177 stores as of March quarter). Given that most of them had sold out by Saturday that means Apple sold at least an estimated 270,000 phones (AT&T and Apple) in aggregate…”

How Many iPhones Does Your Local Store Have?

Iday is tomorrow and while Apple said that customers can purchase two iPhones per person from their stores, many AT&T stores will only be letting go of one per person, thus extending the chances for those in the back of the lines but totally ruining your chances for your friend who has the day off to buy one for you!

There is good news though, you can find out just how many phones your local store has (thus informing you of whether you have a long road trip to a more likely store instead of standing in line all day only to be totally flummoxed!) by checking for iPhone availability starting at 9:00 p.m. tonight on a special Apple web page set up on their site.

Apple has also announced that they will be staying open till midnight on iDay, June 29th. Apple will also be starting new summer “iPhone” hours opening early at 9 a.m. starting this Saturday.

10,9,8,7…. The iPhone iDay Countdown Has Begun!

If you have been hoping to pay someone already camping out at an Apple store in the hopes to get one of the first iPhones, their service prices may have just gone up.

Ads have sprouted up on Craigslist from entrepreneurial people hoping to cash in a quick buck by charging to purchase a phone for someone or giving their place in line to the highest bidder.

Today Apple announced that the phones would be limited to two per person, which actually with the good old law of supply and demand will raise the prices of those coveted first in line spots.

The gadgets are expected to sell out quickly even with the 2 per customer restraints. You can purchase more at the AT&T store but there you also have to sign up for a 2-year service plan thus increasing the cost and adding all sorts of logisticts to transferring the 2-year plan from one name to another (I’m sure there will be those who will figure it out though, we’ll probably see the iPhones on e-bay with a preset service agreement attached).

Can Apple Profit Off the iPhone?

iphone

Is the Apple iPhone a good move for Apple? The first immediate thought at such a question is yes - of course. However, even as Apple has placed an order for 12 million iPhones, anaylsts are noting that an iPhone could cannibalize iPod sales.

The business of cell phones for Apple is like putting together apples and oranges. Apple’s hardware sells for a premium because of the Mac maker’s attention to detail. In contrast the business of cell phones is littered with free phones and rebates. Cell phone makers are able to offer flashy phones with lots of bells and whistles largely because the hardware is subsidized by carrier contracts. These phones would compete against an iPhone. Pacific Growth Equities analyst Derrick Wood, speaking of Apple, said “They can’t compete against the subsidized phones.”
