The Reverse iPod Halo Effect For Wolfson

chipchip1.jpgThe iPod halo effect has proven that it can also be extremely damaging. Wolfson Microelectronics, the Edinburgh microchip designer, which once prospered under the glow set off from the iPod has now suffered an extreme drop in share prices of almost 30 percent, as news broke that the iPod contract from Apple was lost.

Wolfson had previously lost the contract to manufacture the chips for the iPod Classic but was still providing the chips for the iPod Touch and iPod Nano which it admitted to losing yesterday in a business update.

While still making microchips for the iPhone, the loss of the contract has dropped shares to the lowest in three-and-a-half years. Investors are worried that the loss of the iPod contract is just the beginning in setbacks for the once heralded company.Wolfson has also failed to land big deals in other music-enabled phones to replace the MP3 players.

More On The Exploding iCrime Wave

crime.jpgThe iPod has been the talk of crime fighting units everywhere for some time as they have sent out many warnings to iPod owners to get different colored earbuds or hide them when out in public. The police have often warned people not to flaunt their iPod when walking down the street and to try to be aware of the surroundings while engrossed in the music.

Multiple deaths have also occurred when iPod users were listening to their music too loudly and didn’t hear the train coming, or the car honking, or were trying to switch songs while driving.

Now there is a new study out that reinforces the policeman’s view; iPods and their cult-like popularity have helped fuel a massive crime wave. The study was done by Urban Institutes’s Justice Police Center and is called, “Is there an iCrime Wave” written by John Roman and Aaron Chalfin. It looks at how, after a 14 year lull, there was a sudden huge spike in violent crimes involving robberies in the U.S. between 2005 and 2006. This coincided with the huge rise in sales of iPods jumping to over 90 million.

Nike+iPod Soon To Be In Gyms

Nike is working on the next level of the iPod-Nike marriage, that of iPod nano compatible gym equipment.

nike.jpgWith over 100 million iPods out on the market and in peoples hands it seem like a pretty sound investment and one that health clubs such as 24-Hour Fitness and Virgin Athletic Health Clubs among others are supporting.

The health clubs are working with Nike and gym equipment makers to set up equipment compatible with the iPod nano. The nano’s will be able to be plugged into treadmills and the like uploading information to the Nike Web site. Exercisers will than have the ability to track workouts and set various goals.

Over 500 gyms are expected to have the new equipment by this summer.

The gym is the natural step in the evolution of the Nike+iPod shoe. Trevor Edwards, Nike’s vice president of global brand and category management said “People enjoy tracking themselves as a way to keep themselves motivated. They want to get credit.”

Touch Not Working Without Upgrade???

ipod_touch.jpgFor those who are having recurring problems connecting to the iTunes store with a non-upgraded Touch the problem should be fixed soon.

What appears to be happening is that if you have chosen not to upgrade the Touch, and hit the “No Thanks” button when you connect you are taken to the store anyway and are only allowed to right click to sync it. All other features become disabled.

In order to work the Touch again you have to disconnect it from the internet.

Apple has responded on this to troubled users and says they are working on a resolution and will e-mail customers when a solution has been found.

Good luck everyone. Other solution, pay the $20 bucks.

Qtrax - Jumping the Gun

Qtrax is or was, a new advertising based free music download service that on Sunday announced that they had contracts with all the major music labels and 30 million songs available for free download. They also said they had a way to make the songs compatible with the iPod even without a FairPlay license. “We’ve had a technical breakthrough which enables us to put songs on an iPod without any interference from FairPlay,” said Allan Klepfisz, Qtrax’s president and chief executive. He further said “Apple has nothing to do with it,” something that was sure to rile up Steve Jobs to take action to prevent the downloads.

qtrax3.jpgToday, however brings different news and it would seem Qtrax has much more to worry about than Apple fighting their “technical breakthrough”. Today they are fighting the record companies denying their songs and denying deals as well as a possible SEC fraud violation.

How Many Zune/iPods Did People Receive For Christmas?

christmaszue.jpgJust how many Zunes/iPods were under the Christmas tree could be somewhat judged by the increase in traffic that the Zune and iTunes website received on Christmas Day.

The Zune site jumped up 392 percent Christmas Day compared to Christmas Eve. The site also showed a 299 percent increase in traffic from last year. The large increase over the year before does much to reflect the positive impact the new Zunes have had on the market vs the widely criticized first release just before Christmas in 2006.

Apple continued to dominate however, with iTunes getting six times the traffic that the Zune music site got. iTunes jumped 339 percent from Christmas Eve to Christmas day, less of a jump than the Zune site but Hitwise reported that the iTunes website market share was .68 percent while the Zune website market share was just .009 percent.

The Apple store was also a huge hit on Christmas Day jumping 169% over last year.

Apple Stock Hits $200!

applestock.jpgApple has done it! They have reached the $200 dollar mark accomplished today, one day after Christmas.

Apple has always shown a performance jump as it heads into the new year, fresh off the holiday sale of iPods, iPhones, Macs and the anticipation of new announcements at MacWorld. This year has proven to be exceptional with the stock jumping 140 percent in 2007 and with Apple finally reaching the coveted $200 mark.

A huge increase in Mac sales have accounted for the majority of Apples increase in revenue for the year. The computer sales have been boosted by the high publicity of the iPhone and the new iPods. 2007 has brought Mac shipments up 36 percent over last year generating half the of Apple’s total revenue. iPod sales are up as well, but due to the proliferation of the market sales have only increased 4 percent with over a 100 million iPods being sold.

Europe Loves the iPod/iPhone!

kicking_butt.jpgIt would appear that the iPhone and the iPod are the “hot” items for the holiday season in Europe as well as the U.S. ComScore, a digital market research firm, tracked the frequency of online searches in the U.K., France, and Germany and reported that combined the highest searched items were; #1 Nintendo Wii, #2 iPod, #3 Nintendo DS Lite, #4 Playstation PSP, #5 iPhone. The iPod nano was ranked at #7, giving Apple three of the top 10 products.

The iPod in the #2 position had a total of 3.5 million searches. The iPhone while taking #5 of the electrical gadgets was #1 in mobile phone searches with 707,000 weekly searches.

“We know that music players, game consoles, and mobile phones are very popular with consumers this year,” said Bob Ivins, comScore EVP of European Markets. “The interesting aspect of this study is identifying which products are generating the most consumer searches, which can provide retailers and manufacturers with important insight into the underlying consumer demand for each specific product.”
