iPods Sales On Par For Record Numbers

Apple has introduced new iPods for the holiday quarter since the iPod revolution first began in 2001. This year, however was especially significant as Apple brought video to the nano and added touch to the Touch introducing “radically different” iPods.

ipodsnewfinal.jpgDue to the complexity of the new iPods and the insurgent high demand analyst Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray says that he believes Apple may have sold 24 to 25 million iPods in the first two months of the December quarter, beating Wall Street’s consensus of approximately 23 million.

“While it is too early to make a definitive call on December quarter iPod results, we have analyzed the first two months of NPD data (October and November) for the quarter and found that it suggests iPod units of 24m-25m,” said Munster.

“Apple has announced new iPods in September for the last three years, but this year’s models are significantly more innovative than the past upgrades,” Munster said. “As such, we believe the new iPods are driving sales earlier in the December quarter (in October and November) to a greater degree than in the past.”

Soldiers Get Help From The iPod

Soldiers in Iraq are getting some help from nothing else other than the trusty little iPod by putting it to use as much more than just a music player. They are now using it similar to a translator.

With an new program called VCommunicator that can be hooked up to the iPod American soldiers can speak in Arabic without knowing the language. Say if they are guarding a checkpoint and need an Iraqi to get out of the car and let it be searched. They can simply look up “Vehicle Checkpoint” in the mission library on their iPod and a list of phrases will show up such as “we need to search your vehicle.” The soldier can then either have the iPod say the phrase to the person in Arabic through an attached speaker, or they can sound out the phrase shown in phonetics. They can also have the iPod list the phrase in Arabic and let the person read it. A primer on the right even shows them the proper gestures to make when saying the phrase.

SanDisk vs Zune = Shaved Heads

The new Zunes may not have too much effect on the iPod world but they could definitely have an effect on Carmella Lyman’s, the SanDisk PR spokesperson.

She has promised ZDNet writer, David Berlind, that she would shave her head if the Zune took over SanDisks coveted number two spot behind the iPod. Provided, of course, if she wins Robbie Bach, president of the Zune division at Microsoft, shaves his.

She is probably pretty safe in that currently the Zune is number four in the MP3 marketplace with only three percent. SanDisk in second place has ten percent.

Robbie Bach, pledged second place by the end of Christmas saying, “When we’re done with the holiday, people will look and say, ‘There’s Apple and there’s Microsoft.’ The reality of the numerics are that Apple will still be No. 1.”

Bach has until the 31st to accept Lyman’s challenge.

Munster Expects Great Apple Quarter Earnings

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is maintaining his “Outperform” rating and a $160 target price on Apple’s stock as he predicts that Apple will report revenue above Wall Street’s US $5.3 billion estimate for June quarterly earnings.

Regarding the iPhone he said, “We have modeled for 200,000 iPhone shipments in the June quarter and the Street is modeled at about 330,000, but we believe Apple may have sold as many as 500,000 in the first weekend.”

He also says that Apple will most likely have sold more than 1.6 million Macs for the quarter and 10 million iPods beating Wall Street’s expectations for both.

Apple’s stock is currently trading at $138.02.

Apple Red or Green?

Apple is going greener and while Greenpeace is still not satisfied, Jobs in an open letter posted on the Apple website did well to justify where Apple currently is and where it is going.

Apple has taken much grief over the past year from Greenpeace and environmentalists, mainly because they have refused to acknowledge what it is they are doing to go greener but as stated in the letter Jobs wrote, “today we’re changing our policy.”

Apple states that it is taking steps to eliminate toxic chemicals in its computers by going to LED backlit display, as well as no longer using flame-retardant chemicals and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in any products. Apple is also working to get rid of mercury in its monitor backlighting as soon as it becomes “technically and economically feasible”.

Apple Asked To Add Anti-Robbery Tech To iPod

Street robberies of iPods climbed 8 percent for the last 13 weeks of 2006 to 26,600 in the UK and Home Secretary John Reid wants something done about this. The iPods are seen as easy targets for muggers and Reid wants Apple and Sony to incorporate technological solutions into their devices that would make them obsolete to robbers.

“If I had one piece of advice it would be to ask the manufacturers to design in features which reduce crimes,” he told the BBC.

Reid wants the music makers to put in a system similar to what cell phone manufactures have put in. Called International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), the system causes cell phones to be deactivated the next time they are logged onto the network if they are stolen.

“That knocks the bottom out of the market because, if people steal these phones, increasingly they recognize that they cannot sell them,” says Reid.
