Nike+iPod Soon To Be In Gyms

Nike is working on the next level of the iPod-Nike marriage, that of iPod nano compatible gym equipment.

nike.jpgWith over 100 million iPods out on the market and in peoples hands it seem like a pretty sound investment and one that health clubs such as 24-Hour Fitness and Virgin Athletic Health Clubs among others are supporting.

The health clubs are working with Nike and gym equipment makers to set up equipment compatible with the iPod nano. The nano’s will be able to be plugged into treadmills and the like uploading information to the Nike Web site. Exercisers will than have the ability to track workouts and set various goals.

Over 500 gyms are expected to have the new equipment by this summer.

The gym is the natural step in the evolution of the Nike+iPod shoe. Trevor Edwards, Nike’s vice president of global brand and category management said “People enjoy tracking themselves as a way to keep themselves motivated. They want to get credit.”

The New iPods

Apple has just released a whole new sling of iPod which should be in stores this weekend.

First we have the shuffle with a revamping of five brand new colors including red, of which part of the proceeds go the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa.

Second we have the iPod Nano 3G - a video Nano, short and fat as previously touted. The 3G has been nicknamed by many as the “fat nano”. The 3G features video, games, a split screen, enhanced images, coverflow, 5 hours of video playback, retains the click wheel and comes in stylish new colors. Price for the 4GB is $149 and the 8Gb is $199.

Third we have the 80 and amazing 160GB Classic iPods - basically the old video iPod with tons and tons of storage. In all you could store as much as 40,000 songs and 200 hours of video. (Enough to last you even if you are “Lost”). It also features a sleeker design and an all-metal enclosure. Price for the 85Gb is $249, 160GB is $299.

Happy iPod Mother’s Day

A friendly reminder here - Mother’s Day is just around the corner and while it may be okay to be late on a birthday, it is never, ever okay to be late for Mother’s Day. Thus it is important to get started on that little reminder now and Apple is helping by offering free iPod engravings as well as free gift wraps.

How nice it will be for your mom to remember just how much she is loved every time she plays her favorite music on her favorite music player and the special signature gift wrapping is a nice touch as well.

You get one line/38 characters on the shuffle, two lines/23 characters on the Nano, or 2 lines/44 characters on the 30GB so make it good - my favorite “Don’t let Dad borrow this” although “World’s greatest Mom” will probably make her heart melt more.

“Red” Did It Produce A Win-Win?

The RED campaign, which was launched last year to fight aids in Africa was supposed to be a great way to promote the charity and help it. Apple, Gap and Motorola spent over $100 million endorsing their products proudly lined up behind the charity. Yet while their products sold well and they made a hefty profit the charity was given a paltry $18 million, not even coming close to the $100 million spent endorsing it.

This at least was Advertising Age’s point of view regarding the campaign. Bono - who launched RED has a different view.

In a series of open letters to Advertising Age’s publication, Bono has fought back angrily saying that RED was not a failure but rather diverted marketing dollars, that the companies would have spent anyway and turned that marketing into a cause, as well as educating people on the extent of the need in Africa.

Nano #4 - #4???? - But We Like #1

Now don’t get too upset, remember these were the rankings of Consumer Reports - they didn’t look at “cool factor”, all the accessories available, plane and car integration, iTunes or a whole list of other reasons why we buy the Nano. They simply put on their spectacles and made their pronouncement - and the Nano didn’t win in their list of top 18 MP3 players.

Actually it came in fourth - fourth?? Behind iRiver U10 and Cowan iAudio U3 and the Samsung YP-Y8Z?? Have we heard of these? Well Consumer reports has and they ranked the Nano behind them followed by the iRiver T10.

The ratings were based on unbiased reviews (are we biased?) - as well as audio quality, headphone quality and battery life.

I didn’t get the specs, cause you have to do that subscription thing, but thanks to Roger Hibbert, Senior Editor at Yahoo Tech for posting the fab five.

Why Is It Called The Hatphone?

It is not a phone - doesn’t work with a phone, yet - so why the name Hatphone? Why not something like iHat?

Irregardless the Nike Therma-Fit Hatphones have been released in full glory, showing off colors of red, black, silver and gray for the men, and voilet, porpoise blue, black and white for the women. Nike is also offering the hats in a Wool Graphic Hatphone. Porpoise blue and black wool skullcaps are also available for women, with black, brown, dark blue, and white wool skullcaps available for men.

Nike states “This cozy, comfortable skullcap features full functional Nano click wheel controls through a power mesh window in back so you can keep moving while mixing up your music”.

The Nike Therma-Fit Graphic Hatphones are made with a double-brushed microfiber fleece that retains energy and resists heat loss - they retail for $60.00, The Wool Graphic Hatphone’s are made to be cozy and comfortable, they retail for $55.
