Nokia Poised To Continue Domination

nokia.jpgNokia currently controls 39 percent of the 1.1 billion global mobile phone business, and own 50 percent of the worlds smartphones. They are a force to be reckoned with and they are putting up the largest battle of all the mobile phone operators against Apple’s iPhone and Googles new open platformed Android.

“It’s very clear that Apple, Google, and other players are bringing in a lot of new directions,” Nokia’s CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said in an interview with the New York Times. “Convergence is a nice, dandy word, but it means industries colliding.”

Kallasvuo says that Nokia is poised to continue their domination in spite of the drop in market share in the U.S. Nokia now only holds 10 percent of the U.S. market down from 28 percent five years ago. While Kallasvo said they are not going to outright copy Apple’s business of sharing revenue he did say they are looking to expand with a possible shared turnover model in new services provided. “We are interested in Internet communities, navigation and all kinds of entertainment. We will look into these areas and strike when an opportunity arises,” said Kallasvuo.

The iPod Tops 100M, But Is It Still #1?

The iPod has grown into a fashion icon - the “American Idol” of music players, yet even as Apple celebrates reaching 100 million in iPod sales there is new competition that is threatening to overthrow it and maybe already has.

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice-president of hardware marketing said at the celebration, “I don’t think any of us could ever have dreamt that we could come this far this fast.” A true statement as Apple has grown from a questionable company with 5 billion in yearly sales in 2001 to a immensely successful company boldly commanding 23 billion in yearly sales in 2006. A rise made on the back of the iPod with over half of those sales coming from the iPod and its counterpart iPod store: iTunes.

Nokia Killing Apple’s iPod or Apple Killing Nokia

Nokia’s Tommi Mustones when asked if Nokia is predicting the death of the standalone MP3 player had this to say “I don’t see any reason for standalone MP3 players to exist in the long-term. There’s no reason for standalone non-connected MP3 players. You have a worse experience.” This was said while promoting the new Nokia Nseries multi-media computers (not a phone a multi-media computer - when did political correctness apply to phones) which has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, so people can use normal headphones and speaking on how Nokia has sold more than 100 million MP3 player phones (was I supposed to call that a multimedia computer) in 2005 and 2006. The FM tuner on the phone will also be able to access 100,000 radio stations around the world. It also has a podcasting application - “It’s probably the fastest growing audiocasting phenomenon at the moment,” he said. “Our podcasting application allows device owners to go out to the Internet and start searching for podcasts, subscribing to them, and then getting them delivered direct to the device using 3G or wireless LAN. It’s clearly highlighting the importance of connectivity, as there’s no need to use your PC with this application.”
