Munster Expects Great Apple Quarter Earnings

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is maintaining his “Outperform” rating and a $160 target price on Apple’s stock as he predicts that Apple will report revenue above Wall Street’s US $5.3 billion estimate for June quarterly earnings.

Regarding the iPhone he said, “We have modeled for 200,000 iPhone shipments in the June quarter and the Street is modeled at about 330,000, but we believe Apple may have sold as many as 500,000 in the first weekend.”

He also says that Apple will most likely have sold more than 1.6 million Macs for the quarter and 10 million iPods beating Wall Street’s expectations for both.

Apple’s stock is currently trading at $138.02.

iPod Soon To Have Touch-Screen

Gene Munster, the well known Piper Jaffray analyst, is expecting the current iPod to soon be morphed into a new iPod with the iPhone’s touch screen interface.

“We believe the iPhone reveals much of what the iPod will soon be,” Munster stated. “Specifically, we expect Apple to release high capacity iPods based on OS X sometime during or before Macworld ‘08 in January.”

Munster says that he expects the new larger screen iPods to be priced around $299. He does not expect them to have internet capabilities.

Munster also says that he does not expect the iPhone to cannibalize iPod sales, simply because, “most of the current iPod base is simply looking for a better iPod.”

The video iPod is due for a redesign as it has not happened since it was first launched in October, 2005.

All Riding On the iPhone

The iPod lost sales in March, falling below 70% market share for the first time since early 2006, yet Apple’s stock is climbing rapidly reaching above the $109 mark for the first time today.

The stock seems to be rising - not on back of the iPod, a wave Apple has ridden for the last few years, but instead on the hopes of a new item - the iPhone, and on increasing sales of Mac desktops and laptops.

Analysts have strong faith in Apple and their products as UBS analyst Ben Reitzes states, “We believe shares can continue to surge into calendar year end on the back of new products. The thesis that Mac sales can surge is alive and well.”

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster commented “With Apple heading into three quarters of significant product releases (iPhone, Leopard, new iPod) and the education buying season, we expect year-over-year market share gains to continue.”

Apple’s Second Quarter Expected To Show High Profits

Apple is expected to show high fiscal second quarter profits where usually they would see a downtrend in profits due to the post holiday sales slump.

Analyst estimate Apple’s net income rose 43 percent to $586.3 million due to a price cut in the memory chips and display screens Apple uses. This reduction in component cost allowed for Apple’s profit to out pace its sales growth. The price of the flash-memory chips were reduced almost in half falling as much as 45 percent.

“Since component prices have come down more than anticipated, there could be a real nice pickup on the bottom line,” said Chuck Jones, a San Francisco-based analyst for Atlantic Trust which manages $17 billion including Apple shares.

How Are iPod Sales?

Today Piper Jaffray has issued a mid-day report regarding iPod sales for 2007. The report shows that iPod sales didn’t quite reach anticipated levels. Sales maxed at only 10.3 million units instead of the estimated 11 to 12 million units, due to a slow-down of sales in February.

In the past iPod sales have grown in February, usually due to new iPods being announced at MacWorld. This year however only the iPhone was announced, which many would be iPod buyers are waiting for. The iPhone is not due to come out till June. The only “new” iPods released on the market were the colored Shuffles.

Google Not Building iPhone Killer

In recent months Google has been rumored to be building a phone that would be in direct competition to Apple’s much hyped iPhone. The rumors have abounded in spite of an apparent partnership between the two companies. However, Google on Friday terminated the rumors as Alan Eustace, senior vice president of engineering and research stated in an interview, “We’re not doing a mobile phone. I’d like to find something that is broader, rather than do yet another mobile device.”

Google instead is working on software to be used in not one but hopefully in many different mobile phones. They are building friendly mobile phone applications that include e-mail, online maps and search engines for on the move web goers.

Piper Jaffray & Co. analyst Gene Munster wrote yesterday that, “We believe Google is working with, not against Apple in the mobile world. Google is probably building mobile applications that will work with the iPhone and other devices.”
