Watch Out iPhone 2008!

Apple is surely hard at work to prevent any malicious malware attacks predicted for the upcoming 2008 season. According to Arbor Networks Security and Engineering Response Team (ASERT) the iPhone will be “the victim of a serious attack” this next year.

ASERT says this is due to the high public scrutiny the iPhone has received over it being “locked”. Hackers love a challenge and many will want to be the first to hack the iPhone says ASERT.

The iPhone will more than likely fall victim to viscous webpages or in messages sent, similar to attacks on PCs. “Assaults are likely to be in the form of … malware embedded into seemingly harmless information, images or other media that actually perform dangerous actions when rendered on the iPhone’s Web browser,” ASERT said.

“2007 was the year of the browser exploit, the data breach, spyware and the storm worm. We expect 2008 to be the year of the iPhone attack, the Chinese Hacker, P2P network spammers and the hijacking of the Storm botnet,” said Jose Nazario, senior security engineer at Arbor Networks.

Target, Rocks & An iPod

What do they all have in common - Well the story goes like this.

A young girl was happily opening her presents for her 14th birthday party in Fort Worth, Texas. When she got to the big present, the one she had so faithfully been waiting for, she opened it up with excited eyes and trembling hands. Only to find out that while the box read iPod, what it really contained inside the shrink wrap was - rocks.

Needless to say neither her nor her mother, Melanie Ritter, was too happy with the discovery and promptly took it back to Target where Ms. Ritter had purchased the iPod box of rocks. But alas, Target did not have a replacement for the $350 iPod box of rocks, as they were all out of stock.

Warning: Don’t Dial With iPhone Web Dialer

The iPhone web dialer was designed to give users a simple way to dial phone numbers listed on Web pages, but for the moment anyway a warning has been put out: Don’t use the iPhone web dialer.

The warning comes from SPI labs saying there is a bug in the feature that can let hackers redirect calls to 900 numbers. They can also monitor any calls you place - so if you do use the web dialer keep your conversation light enough that it’s okay if the world knows. (keep your secrets to yourself).

The iPhone could also be set so it will no longer let you dial out, or set to dial endlessly (now wouldn’t that be fun to deal with.)

“Because this vulnerability can be launched from Web sites, everybody who has an iPhone has the potential to get exploited,” said Bill Hoffman, lead researcher with SPI labs.
