Apple Lowers Price of iTunes in U.K.

After numerous allegation against Apple, fines and upcoming lawsuits Apple has chosen to reduce the price of music downloads in the U.K. bringing an end to the European Commissions anti-trust investigation against Apple.

jobs_tunes.jpgThe U.K. was one of the few left out of standardized pricing that Apple had already set in Europe as a result of complaints from people traveling from country to country and getting different pricing wherever they went. Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, and Spain currently have unified iTunes pricing. The U.K. however still had a .10 cent higher price per song, due to their use of the pound rather then the euro.

“This is an important step towards a pan-European marketplace for music,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We hope every major record label will take a pan-European view of pricing.”

iPhone Hits The UK W/High Profits for Apple

The deals Apple is making with cell phone carriers that carry the iPhone are a first in cell phone history. Steve Jobs negotiations are legendary and he is proving his worth by creating deals that are sure to give Apple unprecedented profits in the cell phone market.

The 02 is giving Apple as much as 40% of any revenues it makes from customers’ use of the device. 02 will also be giving revenue to Carphone Warehouse, the company which has exclusive rights to sell the iPhone on behalf of 02.

Ben Wood, director of telecom research company CCS Insight said that 02 is gambling on the iPhones ability to draw new customers. Wood said, “O2 “stated today they were prepared to change the business model for this one-time opportunity.” In addition to revenue from the sales of the iPhone itself, Apple will receive a 10 percent cut of the subscription and usage fees.

Vodaphone Sets Bar High for iPhone

Vodaphone had decided not to go “quietly into the good night” and instead is challenging Apple with an “all you want music service” and with a rampant release of 19 new phones for the Christmas season.

Vodaphone is the major rival to O2 in the UK. O2 is basically set for the iPhone contract and Vodaphone does not about to sit back and watch its users switch over to their rival - not without a fight.

Vodaphone is attempting to challenge Apple’s iPhone before it gets to Europe by giving users access to all the music they want, downloadable to their phone for just 1.99 GBP a week.

The music will be delivered by Omnnifone’s MusicStation via the Vodafone Live Internet portal. Over one million songs will be available through Universal, EMI, Sony and Warner.

Analysts are seeing the move for thousands of free downloads at a flat rate as serious competition to any other cell-phone carriers in Europe, even the one holding the precious iPhone.

iTunes Opening Films In UK

Itunes has been around in the UK for almost three years, but while their different stores offer music they have not yet offered films, in spite of the fact that the U.S. has had them since September of 2006.

All that is finally about to change. According to Pascal Cagni, Vice President of Apple’s European division, iTunes will offer films in the UK by the end of the year.

Cagni did not offer any information on which studios will be offering their films.

Cagni also confirmed that the iPhone will also be released in the fourth quarter in Europe as well.
